The syllabus is a necessary communication tool for every course and it is also a great opportunity to support student learning in online environments (and since 2009, it has been required by Texas law). As usual, the syllabus outlines the course expectations, sets the tone for class interaction, creates a guide for expected learning, and provides organization to the course.
The Provost’s office has provided the necessary language for your syllabus to update now for fall 2023:

In addition, we recommend the syllabus include the following information:
- Instructor information: Name and contact information (office location, phone number, email address, in person or online office hours, desired communication method, etc.)
- Course identification: Course number, section, title
- Course description and prerequisites
- Course goals, objectives, and learning outcomes
- List of required course materials & technology
- Class Delivery method, such as Hyflex, synchronous online, asynchronous online, etc.
- Methods for communicating (such as Canvas, CCS, Teams, Zoom, Email, Phone, etc.) and etiquette
- Topics outline/ course calendar
- Grading criteria
- Classroom Policies regarding late work and make-up exams
- Participation Policy (ground rules for class interaction)
- Description of course requirements, e.g., exams, quizzes, projects, papers
- Statement on Academic Dishonesty
- Accommodation of Students with Disabilities (Americans with Disabilities Statement)
- Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
