How to Setup Adaptive Release for an Assessment

If you need to release an exam to a student or specific group of students or would like to release an assessment based on completion of another assessment or assignment, you can use the adaptive release setting to specify your release conditions.

 

Part I:  Releasing Exam to Specific Individual Students

  1. Locate an exam in your course content and click the action link (Chevron icon) of the test.
  2. Select Adaptive Release.
  3. In the “Membership” section > “Username” field, click Browse to release the test to a specific student.
  4. In the “Course Membership” window, search for the specific students by Username, first name, last name, or email. select your search criterion, type in the information, and choose Go.
  5. It will pull up a list of students who match that criterion. Select the checkbox next to the student’s name and choose Submit.
  6. The student’s username is shown at the “Username” box.
  7. Click Submit.
  8. The “Enabled: Adaptive Release”is shown below the name of the exam on the content page.

Part II:  Releasing Exam to Specific Group of students

Note:  In order to release an exam to a group, you need to create the group.  How to Create Manual Enroll Groups

  1. Locate an exam in your course content and click the action link (Chevron icon) of the test.
  2. Select Adaptive Release.
  3. In the “Membership” section >”Course Groups” field , select a group and use the >  to move the group into the”Selected Items.” field. You should see the group name move to the “Selected Items” box.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. The “Enabled: Adaptive Release”is shown below the name of the exam on the content page.

Part III:  Releasing Exam Based on Completion of Another Assessment or Assignment

You can set a grade criterion to release an exam.  When the grade criterion is created, the exam is not visible to students until the grade criterion is met.

  1. Locate an exam in your course content and click the action link (Chevron icon) of the test.
  2. Select Adaptive Release.
  3. Under the “Grade” section > the “Select A Grade Center column” field, click the drop-down menu to select any assessment item, e.g., assignment, discussion, or assessment.
  4. In the “Select Condition” field, select whether this will be based on simple completion of the selected assessment item or a specific score the student must obtain.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. The “Enabled: Adaptive Release”is shown below the name of the exam on the content page.

Part IV:  Releasing Exam Based on Reviewing Status

You can create a review status criterion to release an exam.  When this review status criterion is applied, the exam is not visible to students until the selected item is marked as reviewed.  Setting a review status means that a student cannot access the assessment until after they have reviewed and checked that they have reviewed another item in the course. For example, this can be used to get an acknowledgement from students that they have looked over the academic honesty policy prior to taking the exam.

Click on “Browse” to see the complete content of the course. Then, click on the item that is required for review. Once you click on it, you should see that item listed in the box for “Review.” You may also get a message saying that review status has been enabled for the required item.

  1. Locate an exam in your course content and click the action link (Chevron icon) of the test.
  2. Select Adaptive Release.
  3. In the “Review Status” section > “Select an Item” field, click Browse.  The complete course content panel is shown.
  4. Click on the item that is required for review, e.g., syllabus.  The selected item is shown in the “Select an Item” field. Click Submit.
  5. A message “This selection will turn on Review for the selected item” is shown.  Select OK.
  6. The “Enabled: Adaptive Release”is shown below the name of the exam on the content page.
