How to Create Discussion Forums & Threads

Discussions are a good way to encourage students to think critically about your coursework and interact with each others’ ideas.

Part I:  Create a Discussion Forum

  1. In the “Course Menu,” click Discussions link.
  2. Click Create Forum.
  3. Enter a name in the “Name” field.
  4. Enter a description (if you want to) of the forum in the “Description” field.
  5. You can edit the discussion forum’s settings by scrolling down to the Forum Settings
  6. Click Submit.
  7. The new forum will be displayed in Discussions and can be accessed to create threads.

Part II: Create a Discussion Thread

Within a forum discussions can be organized into ‘threads’. As the discussion manager, you will want to create threads with leading questions.

  1. Click the title of the forum you want to add a thread.
  2. Click Create Thread.
  3. Enter the title of the message in the subject field.
  4. Enter conversation text in the message field.
  5. Click Submit.
