How to Grade Exam Short-Answer or Essay Questions

The true/false and multiple-choice questions in your exam are graded automatically in Blackboard.  However, the short-answer and essay questions must be graded manually.  When any student’s exam requires grading, you will see an exclamation mark in the associated grade column in the Grade Center. You have two options to grade these types of questions.

Option I:  In View Attempt

  1. In Control Panel, click Grade Center, and select Full Grade Center.
  2. In Grade Center, locate a cell for the student’s exam containing an exclamation mark.
Note: The exclamation mark appears when a test requires grading.
  3. Hover the cell and click the Action link (Chevron icon).
  4. Select View Grade Details.
  5. On the “Grade Details” page, the exam attempt the student made is show. Click View Attempt.
  6. On the “Grade Test” page, review the student’s answers, enter a grade, and write response feedback, if desired.
  7. Click Submit.
