How to Share OneDrive Files in Canvas

If you have uploaded the course syllabus, assignments, or PowerPoint files in OneDrive, you can share these files in your Canvas course.

Classroom Application: When you put syllabus or other course files in OneDrive and share in Canvas, you can edit these files in OneDrive, and they will be updated in Canvas automatically. You no longer need to download, revise, and upload these course files into Canvas every semester.

  1. Upload course files to OneDrive.  See Tutorial.
  2. Select the file you want to share and click Copy link.
  3. A link to the file is created. By default, any UH students can edit this file.  Click the right arrow to show the Link settings and make the change.
  4. In Link Setting:
    a. Make sure People in University of Houston with the link option is selected.
       Note: If you want any external users to access this link, you can select “Anyone with this link.”
    b. Uncheck Allow editing.
    c. Check Block download if you only allow students to view the file.
        Note: This option is not available for the video file.
    d. Select Apply.
  5. Click Copy.  Then, close the window
  6. In your Canvas course, go to an existing module on the Home or Module page and click + in the header.
  7. In the Add box, click on the arrow, and select External URL and paste the copied One Drive link,
  8. Enter the Page Name and click Add Item.
  9. The item will be added to the module. Make sure to publish it.
  10. To embed the One Drive file, go to the file in One Drive and click Share button on the top right and select Embed Code.
  11. Click Copy embed code.
  12. Go back to Canvas module and click + in the header and select Page from the Add box.
  13. Click Create Page.  Enter a Page Name. Click Add Item.
  14. A page will be added to the module.
  15. Click on the page link and click Edit.
  16. Click the html editor button located at the bottom of the text box.
  17. Paste the code and click Save.
  18. The embedded video will appear on the page.
