Tips for Turnitin Issues

There have been sporadic issues with Turnitin assignments, where, sometimes, student grades do not sync in Canvas gradebook, or submissions are marked ‘late’ even though submissions were made on time.  If you have experienced these issues in your course, please review this article for tips on how to resolve them.

Problem:  The due date of the Turnitin assignment changes to the date when instructor grades the submissions, which is usually after the due date, marking the submissions late in Canvas Grades.

Solution:  You can ignore the late status if you do not have a late submission policy enabled, or you can apply one of the options listed below:

Option 1: Change the Turnitin assignment due date to a date in the future.

  1. Go to the Assignments page and click on the Turnitin assignment link.
  2. Click on Edit Assignment Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Assign area of the settings.
  4. Click the Due field or the calendar icon to enter a date in the future.
  5. Click the Until field or the calendar icon to enter a date in the future to match the due date, or leave it blank.
  6. Click ‘Save’.
  7. The submission status will change to ‘None’, and the grade’s cell color will change to blue in the Canvas gradebook.
Note: Remember, the date change will make the Turnitin assignment available.  It is advised to make the date changes after all the submissions have been made.

Option 2: Change the late submission status to ‘None’ for each submission.

  1. Click Grades in the left toolbar.
  2. Click the red cell that shows late status for a submission, and click the arrow to bring up the status screen.
  3. Under Status, select ‘None‘ and close the screen.
  4. The cell color will change to white, removing the late status.

Problem: Turnitin assignment grades do not sync with Canvas gradebook.

Solution: Upload Turnitin grades into Canvas gradebook.

  1. Click Turnitin assignment link to access the Assignment Inbox.
  2. Click the Download All button and select Grade Report.
  3. That will generate an Excel file with Turnitin grades.
  4. Go back to Canvas Grades and click Export, selecting any of the options. That will generate an excel file with Canvas grades.
  5. In the Canvas excel file, remove all columns except student data.
  6. Go back to Turnitin excel file, copy the grade column, and paste it into the Canvas excel.
  7. Go to Canvas Grades, click Import and select the Canvas excel file with the Turnitin grade column. The column can be uploaded as a new column.
  8. The imported Turnitin grades do not include the feedback.  Students can view the feedback by going to the Turnitin assignment link on the Assignments page and clicking their paper.
